CT Fertility - Vitrification

Vitrification - what is

Vitrification is different than other freezing methods in that it is a flash freezing approach and our method involves a unique storage device and very small freezing volume. During vitrification, the eggs (or embryos) are quickly dehydrated and immediately submerged into liquid nitrogen (-186 degrees C or -302.8 degrees F). The eggs survive cryopreservation much better (~93%) than other methods such as slow freezing (~50%) because less ice crystals are formed during the process. Ice crystals are like freezer burn in that they form on the membranes of the cells and cause them to lyse (break) when the cells are thawed.
